Samhain; The death of the old year, the nameless day and the birth of the new year were celebrated at Tara, the Hill of Kings in ancient Ireland. At Samhain the walls between the world are at their thinnest. Spirits may walk in the world of the living, and the living may enter the realm of the dead and the otherworld of the Sidhi. People venturing out on the night of Samhain would disguise themselves as spirits, and carve lanterns in the shape of heads out of gourds, to light the passage of the dead, Halloween traditions which carry on to the present day.
